James Cash
Grad./Goaltender
UMSL Tritons
For four years as a Saint Louis Billiken, James Cash was the nemesis of powerful UMSL teams -- the one opposing goaltender the Tritons never seemed to be able to light up. He was one of the best-kept secrets in St. Louis roller hockey.
Few realized just how great Cash was until 2006-07, when he was named the Pro Inline Hockey Association Gateway Division's top goaltender, and led darkhorse SLU to a highly unlikely berth in the NCRHA DII national championship game.
Cash was named NCRHA Division II's most valuable goaltender after carrying the Billikens to a second-place national finish with playoff wins over favored Emory, Long Beach State, and defending national champ Neumann.
After graduating from SLU, Cash enrolled in graduate school at UM-St. Louis for his final season of NCRHA eligibility, where he would lead the Tritons to the Great Plains regional championship in their first season as a Division I team.
In the GPCIHL championship game, Cash stopped 33 shots to knock off six-time defending national champ Lindenwood, the nearly unbeatable opponent, who had won 109 games in a row before being upset by UMSL.
Cash was a consensus first-team Division I All-American in '07-08, claiming first team honors from both the NCRHA and the Independent Ranking committee.
James has earned widespread respect for more than just his peerless puck-stopping prowess. He is intelligent, classy, and level-headed, and every accolade is well-deserved. If anyone can be called an inline hockey legend, it is James Cash.
2007-08
NCRHA College Roller Hockey National Championships: Cash fell victim to a goalie rotation in Colorado Springs; depite playing just three of UMSL's seven games (games two, four, and six), he was nonetheless named first team all-tournament . . . Notched victories over Colorado State in the round robin, Long Beach State in the first round, and Central Florida in the semifinal.
GPCIHL Regional Championships (March 2): Just 30 hours after being lit up by Lindenwood in the teams' final regular-season matchup, Cash had his revenge in the GPCIHL Division I championship, stopping 33 of 37 shots in a spectacular, timeless performance reminiscent of his awesome run during last season's national championships . . . Cash dug deep to earn the crowning victory, as the temperature outside was over seventy degrees at game time, and he was on the brink of heat exhaustion for much of the third period . . . Cash once again redefined himself, adding a new feather to his cap: he is the first goaltender in four-plus seasons to defeat Lindenwood.
GPCIHL Regionals Weekend - Regular Season Wrap-up Saturday (March 1): Cash struggled in UMSL's 11-2 loss to Lindenwood, allowing six first-period goals and two more in the second before giving way to Thomas Ames . . . Cash would redeem himself on Sunday, however....
Fifth GPCIHL Event Weekend (Feb. 16-17): Missed the abbreviated two-game weekend due to an out-of-town commitment. Fourth GPCIHL Event Weekend (Feb. 9-10): Cash posted another shutout, backstopping UMSL's 10-0 win over Meramec on Sunday . . . Stopped six of seven shots in UMSL's 11-1 win over Illinois State on Saturday.
Third GPCIHL Event Weekend (Jan. 19-20): Cash started two games, winning both, and gave up one goal on 35 total shots . . . Has allowed just five even-strength goals all season . . . Stopped 17 of 18 shots in 9-1 win over St. Charles CC on Saturday morning . . . Was outstanding in shutting out Mizzou 4-0 Sunday; UMSL clung to a two-goal lead deep into the third period, and needed Cash's stellar goaltending to seal the win.
Second GPCIHL Event Weekend (Nov. 17-18): In his only start of the three-game weekend, Cash stopped all 16 shots in backstopping UMSL's 8-0 shutout victory over Illinois State on Saturday evening.
GPCIHL Season-Opening Weekend (Nov. 3-4): Won two of three starts in his debut weekend . . . The ’07 All-American’s UMSL debut was in the Tritons’ 7-3 loss to top-ranked Lindenwood . . . Made several key saves to keep the Tritons in the game . . . Shut out Middle Tennessee State in his second UMSL game . . . Was awesome in UMSL’s 6-3 win over Mizzou, stopping 19 of 22 shots in a tight game that was in doubt until the Tritons scored twice in the final two minutes to ice it.
