Tim McFarland started his rookie season on the '05-06 UMSL B Division squad, and he joined the DII Rivermen Jan. 22 for a critical game against Wash U. His first shift didn't come until the third period, but McFarland made the most of it, assisting on Jason Shields' second goal of the game.
After one more B game, Tim was on the varsity for good. He scored six goals in nine DII league games and flashed the raw ability to be a big-time goalscorer for the Rivermen.
Tim has soft hands and a quick release on a wicked wrister. He has good hockey sense, and he enjoys the physical play along the boards.
Finally, McFarland took his rookie hazing like a man -- a Riverman. Before Nationals, he gave the water bottles their first washing of the year. He rode to Nationals in the rookie van, all the way from St. Louis to Raleigh. And when the van arrived in Raleigh, Tim allowed Ben Lambert and Wally Iverson to shave his mop of hair into the sweetest mullet ever, giving Ben an opportunity to fulfill his dream: creating ultimate trashyness.
McFarland is a keeper, and he's begun to prove it. He is one of UMSL's best offensive finishers. In the second semester of '06-07, he joined star forward Jeremy Scott on the Rivermen's top scoring line, and scored a pair of crucial goals at Regionals to help the Rivermen to the league championship.
He is the team's least experienced player, but is a conscientious learner and is always hungry to improve. Tim's rise to a prominent role in this talented lineup is truly an inspiration.
